Student Teaching

Handbook

2025-2026

Dear IU Indianapolis Student Teachers, Mentor Teachers, and Coaches,

I am delighted to introduce you to the Student Teaching Handbook for the upcoming academic year. This handbook is a vital resource designed to support all members of the student teaching process— Student Teachers, Mentor Teachers, and Coaches (University Supervisors)—throughout the student teaching experience.

Student teaching is an essential clinical opportunity for our candidates to apply all that they have learned. It is also a chance for them to learn from you—their Mentor Teachers and Coaches—about the practical applications of the theory and knowledge you bring to the classroom. As professional educators, your role in preparing new teachers is invaluable to each candidate, to the School of Education, and to the teaching profession as a whole.

Our focus is on student learning. All processes involved in assessing our candidates' growth and abilities revolve around their support of student learning. This handbook provides an overview of student teaching with a focus on student learning and reflection and guides you through this collaborative approach.

Enclosed, you will find support materials and information about collaborative teaching and our evaluation process. Please take the time to review the following materials:

Collaborative Teaching: We expect this to be integral to the student teaching placement.

Summary of Responsibilities: Outlines the roles of the Student Teacher, Mentor Teacher, and Coach (University Supervisor).

Overview of Evaluation Materials: Includes tips for observations and providing feedback to candidates.

Evaluation Forms and Rubrics: Structured observation forms, midterm and final evaluations, along with goal setting.

Your time, counsel, and practical suggestions are deeply appreciated. You are an essential member of the student teaching experience at Indiana University School of Education Indianapolis. Your dedication and expertise help shape the future of education, and we are grateful for your commitment to our candidates' success.

Thank you for your continued support and for being an integral part of our educational community.

Warm regards,

The Office of Clinical Experience

Indiana University School of Education Indianapolis
