Licensure

Licensure

Apply for licensure as soon as you meet criteria.

You will be ready to apply when you have completed these requirements:

1. Complete your undergraduate program, including student teaching, and verify your degree has posted to your student transcript. ATAC/DBAC students should verify all program requirements have been met with their academic advisor.

2. Pass the Indiana Praxis Pedagogy and Content Tests required for your license area. https://www.in.gov/doe/educators/educator-licensing/ educator-testing/. Tests may be taken at any time; you do not need to wait until after graduation.

3. Hold valid CPR/AED/Heimlich certification, which includes both knowledge and hands-on skills training. CPR-Heimlich-AED Certification. Certification is valid for 2 years.

4. Pass Suicide Prevention Training using either IU Indianapolis SPT Module or IDOE SPT Vendors. IDOE recommends using The Jason Foundation if choosing an outside vendor.

ENL & Sped Students ONLY:

ENL & Sped students must have completed 8 weeks of student teaching in that area.

ENL program students must pass Test # 5362, English to Speakers of Other Languages, to add that content area.

Special Education program students must pass Test # 5355, Special Education: Foundational Knowledge (Mild Intervention).

Special Education program students who have completed the additional 9 credit hours for Intense Intervention, must pass Test # 5547, Special Education: Severe to Profound (Intense Intervention). Please verify that you have completed program requirements before taking this test.

Contact the IU Indianapolis Licensing Advisor with any questions regarding testing or the licensing process.

When you are ready to apply for licensure, go to the Indiana Licensing and Verification System (LVIS): https://license.doe.in.gov/ - Create an Account: - Start an application and choose “Apply for a New License”.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Upload copies of your CPR certification, SPT training and Praxis Test Scores when requested.

DO NOT pay for your application until you have completed ALL licensure requirements listed above. There are no refunds for applications that are incomplete.

After the IU Licensing Advisor reviews and recommends your license, you will receive an email from IDOE allowing you to view and print your license.

Job Search Considerations

It is recommended that students maintain the following documents to assist with their job search:

Teaching Philosophy Statement

Letters of Recommendation (especially Mentor Teacher) Resume

Student Teaching Final Evaluation

In addition, the IU Licensing Advisor can provide you with a “Letter of Pending Program Completion” when you are in your final semester. This letter includes the date the School of Education expects you to graduate, your program of study, and that we intend to recommend you for licensure when all requirements are met. You can submit this letter with your job applications.

Professors, Mentor Teachers, Principals and employers are all good resources for Letters of Recommendation.

The IDOE maintains a statewide job base for Educators. You can access that here: https://app.hirenimble.com/jobs/state/in
