Student Teacher Responsibilities


Initial Responsibilities:

Familiarize yourself with information about student teaching placement.
Contact your Mentor Teacher, visit the classroom and school prior to starting the placement.
Pass the criminal history check required by the district or school corporation prior to student teaching.

Ongoing Responsibilities:

Know the students as individuals and learners - their strengths, interests and needs.
Be prepared for school each day with lesson plans and supporting materials, ensure that the Mentor Teacher has these in advance in case you are absent.
Be a good role model to students in appearance, mannerisms, language use, and behavior. Dress in compliance with school policy on dress code.
Be open-minded about the policies and procedures of the Mentor Teacher and the school and respect them; be flexible.
Observe the same daily work schedule of the Mentor Teacher (at minimum), arrive early and stay late.
Handle all personal information professionally and confidentially. Be patient with student progress, behaviorally and academically.
Volunteer to help with activities when you recognize a need exists, (i.e. housekeeping, routine duties, and other ways to help within the class).
Participate in school-wide events such as teacher meetings, open houses, and other school-based activities.
Gain an understanding of the rationale/purpose behind specific lessons, units, and school-wide programs.
Refrain from being on your phone for personal use during class time when you are in the presence of students (This includes texting).
NO Social Media Usage - Do not talk about your student teaching experience or post pictures, make comments, or implicate your public school, mentor or students on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Prepare for active participation in the midterm and final evaluation process (e.g. self-assess review structured observation feedback, midterm/final conference rubrics, complete assignment deadlines, etc.).
Communicate proactively, regularly, and honestly with your Coach (University Supervisor) and Mentor Teacher. Actively seek feedback and support.

Closing Responsibilities:

Submit all assignments in a timely manner.
Complete Final Assessment and Student Teaching Survey.


Mentor Teacher Responsibilities

Initial Responsibilities:

Prepare students for the Student Teachers arrival. Create an atmosphere where the Student Teacher feels part of the classroom/school community.
Acquaint Student Teacher with school policies and procedures.
Introduce the Student Teacher to faculty, staff, school, and local communities.


Ongoing Responsibilities:

Communicate and collaborate regularly with the Student Teacher on planning, instruction and assessment. Please provide instructional materials or electronic websites, etc.
Acquaint the Student Teacher with the needs of the student by sharing assessment and/or IEP information, and/or various types of plans for instruction.
Demonstrate a variety of effective teaching and engagement techniques.
Observe the Student Teacher on a regular basis. Arrange to see all subjects/periods for which Student Teacher is responsible. Provide frequent encouragement, constructive feedback and recognition of success.
Provide the Student Teacher with the opportunity to assume full time teaching responsibility, under guidance, for an appropriate amount of time, but not until such time as the Student Teacher has demonstrated both confidence and competence.
Provide structured feedback to the Student Teacher using the Observation Form. Complete a minimum of two Structured Observations, one before and one after the midterm. Provide a copy of these observations to the Student Teacher and the Coach (University Supervisor).
Demonstrate, provide, and discuss a variety of effective classroom management and discipline techniques. Communicate frequently with the Coach (University Supervisor) to support the Student Teacher. Report any concerns right away.
Collaborate with the Coach (University Supervisor) to prepare and present the midterm and final evaluations to the Student Teacher.


Closing Responsibilities:

Complete Final Assessment on Qualtrics link and Student Teaching / IU Indianapolis Survey.

Mentor/Cooperating Teacher Stipend and PGP Letter:

IU Indianapolis will provide Mentor/Cooperating Teachers with a stipend for 8-week, 10-week or 16-week mentorships.


Upon completion of the mentorship, Mentor/Cooperating Teachers will be contacted via email by the IU Indianapolis School of Education with the appropriate documents for payment. You will also be provided with a PGP letter outlining your mentorship weeks.


Stipends will be paid approximately 3-5 weeks after submission of all payment documents and the Final Student Teacher Evaluation. Please contact the School of Education, 317-274-6801, with any concerns regarding your stipend.

Coach (University Supervisor) Responsibilities

Initial Responsibilities:

Gain familiarity with the Collaborative Teaching Principles.
Gain an understanding of all the university requirements Student Teachers must meet.
Reach out to the Student Teachers alerting them that you will be their Coach.


Ongoing Responsibilities:

Develop a collaborative approach with the Student Teacher and Mentor Teacher to support the student teaching experience and communicate regularly together.
Complete a minimum of Four Formal Observations. Input data from observation into the Qualtrics form within 48 hours of the observation. (Please be sure that feedback is specific, direct and supportive.)
Provide verbal and written feedback following each observation. Arrange to see two literacy lessons and various other content.
Provide feedback on GoReact Lessons within a week of submission. Participate in seminars as needed.
Participate in PEER observations with another Coach each semester. (One peer observation for each six Student Teachers).
Collaboratively prepare and facilitate the midterm conference with the Mentor Teacher and the Student Teacher to support growth and development.
Provide support and guidance regarding professional ethics, employment services and opportunities, and interviews with prospective employers.
Maintain written documentation on each Candidate's progress.
Attend all Coaches meetings offered by the Office of Clinical Experiences. Report any problems with the student teaching experience to the Office of Clinical Experiences immediately.


Closing Responsibilities:

Make sure all necessary paperwork, assignments and evaluations are submitted on CANVAS or to the Office of Clinical Experiences in a timely manner.
