The Gorman Teaching Award was established by a benefactor alumnus of the School of Education for the purpose of recognizing creative teaching in the preparation of education professionals at Indiana University. This award carries a cash prize. All tenure and non-tenure track faculty of the core campus, including faculty of other units who teach courses in educational methods or techniques, whether their appointments are full-time, part-time, or adjunct are eligible.
Criteria for the award include creativity, pioneering, and impact of teaching. While a high quality of teaching effort is necessary and important, the benefactor has stipulated that the criterion of innovative and imaginative ideas should be foremost in selecting the recipient. "Teaching" should be broadly construed, so as to include conceptualization, planning, integration of courses, research, instruction in classrooms and/or in other settings, individual work with students, and evaluation.
Nominations can be forwarded by a faculty member, administrator, student, or the nominee.
Procedures for Submitting Nominee Materials
The nominee should prepare a succinct electronic packet of materials for the Faculty Development Committee reviewers, including:
- the nominating letter
- no more than 3 additional support letters (at least 1 letter should be a student letter and at least 1 letter should be a faculty letter)
- the nominee’s vita
- a critical self-analysis of teaching by the nominee (including some description of what the nominee is trying to accomplish in her or his teaching, how she or he goes about it, and why, some evaluation of the teaching, and reflections on the teaching over time--see page limits below*)
- a summary of teaching evaluations for courses taught in the last 5 years (5 page maximum)
- (if applicable) up to 2 publications related to teaching
Each nominee’s dossier should be structured to best represent her or his own case.
*Please note that the self-analysis of teaching statement should not exceed 4-6 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, one inch margins with tables appended to the end (tables optional). Nominees may attach an additional sheet for references.
Do not include any additional material as it will not be considered. Each file should be converted to PDF format and appropriately named. Candidates should contact Jane Kaho at mkaho@indiana.edu to receive a link to a box folder into which all submission materials should be uploaded. All materials must be in the assigned box folder by March 1, 2017. The Faculty Development Committee will determine the recipient. The Teaching Awards are presented at the annual Celebration of Teaching Ceremony held in the School of Education Auditorium each spring. The 2016-2017 ceremony will take place on April 21, 2017.
