Ways to Give

  • Cash: Most donors choose cash and cash equivalents, whether as annual gifts, a one-time gift, or a gift pledged over a five-year period.
  • Securities: Gifts of appreciated securities, such as stocks, bonds, and mutual fund shares, provide a double benefit. Donors receive a charitable deduction, in most cases, for the full fair-market value of the property on the day of receipt and avoid any potential capital-gains tax.
  • IRA Charitable Rollovers: Starting at age 70 ½, individuals can give up to a maximum of $100,000 per year from their IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Indiana University without having to pay income taxes on the money. This is also known as the qualified charitable distribution (QCD). Beginning in the year you turn 72, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD).

  • Bequests: You may make your gift through your will or estate plan. If you do, please communicate your intentions to us. We want to be able to honor your gift and to ensure it will be used exactly as you intend.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs): CGAs provide up to two annuitants with a guaranteed income for life, in exchange for an irrevocable gift of cash or securities. Rates for CGA payouts are determined by the annuitant’s age at the time the gift is made and are guaranteed for life. IU Foundation CGAs are not available in all states.

It's possible to use one or a combination of these methods to fulfill your philanthropic goals.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss these options with you in more detail.

Indiana University Foundation recommends that you obtain professional tax or legal advice to ensure you are receiving the maximum tax benefits from your gift.
