Graduate Initial Licensure

Not all teachers' backgrounds are the same

We know that not everyone follows the same path to a career in education, which is why we have created transition programs that help you achieve your goal of becoming a teacher—regardless of your background.

We offer the Aspiring Teacher Alternative Certification (ATAC) and District-Based Alternative Certification (DBAC) programs for Bachelor degree holders who are interested in obtaining an Indiana teaching license.

All applicants are required to submit their transcripts, with the degree conferral, to be reviewed for admission.

Priority application deadlines

  • March 1st for the upcoming Summer or Fall

Note:

  • Elementary ATAC or DBAC program begins once a year in the Fall
  • Secondary ATAC or DBAC program begins once a year in the Summer

Please contact Sharice Booker at sbreland@iu.edu for information about applying after March 1st.

What to expect after you apply

You will receive an email confirmation after you submit your application. The notification will be sent to the email address that you included in your application. We will contact you if any additional information is required. Completed applications will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee after the priority application deadline.

Note: In some cases, the committee may request to schedule an interview, prior to making an admission decision.

You will be notified, via email, of the committee’s admission decision.
