Biography
Dr. Samantha Franklin has been a professional educator for over 22 years. Before obtaining a full-time position with IUPUI, she was a 6th grade English teacher, high school math teacher, and a professional school counselor in traditional elementary and middle school settings as well as in an alternative school setting for middle school and high school students. She holds a BA in English and an MA Education, both from Hampton University. She also has an MS in School Counseling from Butler University and a PhD in Counselor Education Supervision. In her K-12 career, Dr. Franklin wrote and developed a teacher mentor program for new teachers, created a school-wide discipline plan and led a team of teachers through its implementation, and worked with all faculty and staff to change school culture and decrease office referrals. She has earned such distinctions as First Year Teacher of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Superintendent’s Award, Center for Leadership Development “Up and Coming in Education” Award, and the Black Excellence in Education Award. Dr. Franklin has been the featured guest on several podcasts on the topics of helping others and owning a mission driven business. She currently serves at IUPUI in the role of Assistant Professor and Faculty Coordinator of School Counseling Fieldwork. Her published research centers around the role School Counselors play in equity access, social justice advocacy, and diversity and inclusion.

Interests:
Dr. Franklin is interested in research with relation to access to college and career readiness and preparation of students who receive free or reduced lunch and who represent minoritized populations. She is also interested in research pertaining to social justice, advocacy, and the placement of students from minoritized backgrounds into accelerated classes.
