Résumé/CV

Biography

Dr. Crystal Morton is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Urban Teacher Education at the IU School of Education in Indianapolis. Currently, she serves as the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development and Director of Research for the Great Lakes Equity Center. Dr. Morton is also founder and director of Girls STEM Institute.

Dr. Morton served as the UES coordinator from 2018-2021. She continues to teach in the program, serves on numerous UES student committees, and mentors UES students during and after they graduate from the UES program.

Dr. Morton holds a B.A. in Mathematics, a M.A.T. in Secondary Mathematics Education and a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Culture, and Change from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Her scholarly work focuses on secondary mathematics education with an emphasis on the role of informal STEM learning in fostering equitable and transformative mathematics teaching and learning experiences. Dr. Morton’s research primarily examines the learning experiences, specifically mathematics learning experiences, of Black girls in grades 3-12 and the impact of a holistic informal STEM learning program rooted in the community and parent/caregiver engagement.

Dr. Morton also serves a Co-PI on the N.S.F. funded Carver Teaching Initiative Inspiring the Next Generation of STEM Teaching Professionals through Internships, Recruitment, and Engagement (CTI-Inspire) project. As a former high school mathematics teacher, she is passionate about preparing people from historically marginalized populations to become the next generation of STEM professionals and leaders. Focusing on the mathematics and personal development of Black girls and young women, Dr. Morton founded Girls STEM Institute. Girls STEM Institute aims to transform communities by empowering girls of color to become leaders, innovators, and educators who use STEM as a tool for personal and social change. Girls STEM Summer Institute is open and available to all individuals, regardless of race or gender.
